Project Summary
„Everything you need is in you”- this is the title of our project which was started in 2021. The main aim of the project is the popularization of sport as an active free time activity. The positive effects of sport in preserving our mental and physical health are well known. The teachers who conduct the programme are committed to the different forms of everyday sport. We offer numerous alternatives to boost the physical activity and motivation and present the negative effects of using the social media.
The project will be implemented with the cooperation of three countries: Poland Turkey and Hungary. The coordinator of the project is Zespol Szkolno from Łódź, Poland. Ayse Ana Imam Hatip Ortaokulu from Usak, Turkey and Felsőtárkány Primary School from Felsőtárkány, Hungary are involved to the project as partners.
We organized five international meetings, two in Poland, two in Turkey and one in Hungary. We dealt with the different aspects of sport such as the positive effects of doing sport, dangers, physical education in the partner schools and popular national sports. During the international meetings students took part in various indoor and outdoor sports such as wrestling, martial arts, ball games or horse riding. The students also taught their favourite sport games to each other. We implemented workshops and presentations in each country leading by professional sport experts or popular sportsmen. The participant students worked on sport related topics in teams and made posters, videos, and surveys cooperatively. As a result of the project we created a Teachers’ Guide-a collection of the project-based lesson plans- and integrated new practices and teaching methods into our curriculums. The programme was completed with cultural excursions and sightseeing to introduce the different cultures.
Beyond the popularization of sport, the project activities improved the communicative skills and the intercultural competences of the participants. Teamwork stimulated cooperation and creativity. The multicultural environment promoted empathy and strengthened the European identity.
Łódź 22-26 November 2022
The first project meeting took place in Poland. The Turkish school participated in the activities in a traditional way however, the Hungarian school joined virtually because in Hungary there were limitations on travelling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hungarian school connected online to the meetings and also received materials to play (e.g. films, presentations). After the official opening of the meeting, the students held short presentations to introduce their schools. The host school organized model lessons with the participation of the Polish students. The PE classes presented the sports that are provided at the school.
We had the first coordinators’ meeting where we discussed the goals of the project and the agenda of the meeting.
In the Extracurricular Activities Centre the participants watched and took part in karate and dance classes. A video of these activities was recorded for the project partners from Hungary and sent along with the lesson outline. The situations of physical education in partner schools were discussed – We also shared our opinions about the possible ways of raising interest towards sport. Students made posters entitled ‘Do young people play sports?’ The students of the host school prepared a presentation about the outstanding athlete who graduated from the host school - Artur Partyka. The participants visited the Ethnographic Museum in Łódź and the Widzew Stadium, where they learned about the history of sport events that took place in the city.
Usak 7-11 June 2022
Our second meeting was held in Turkey, where the representatives of all partner schools could participate. The programme started with becoming acquainted. We visited the host school and gained an insight into the everyday life of the Turkish students. We took part in variegated activities, craft workshops and model lessons. The children were happy to learn the folk dances of the different nations. All students enjoyed dancing demonstrating that it is an alternative way of spending our free time actively.
The programme of the mobility offered further opportunities to propagate different sports. In the local sport centre, we were involved into a martial art show. Then the coach of the Turkish Gymnastics nationals assisted the brave volunteers who wanted to try the elements of gymnastics. On the other day we took a short walk in the Ulubey canyon near Usak and admired the beauty of the surrounding nature. We also went to a daylong excursion to visit Antalya and Kursunlu and Duden waterfalls.
Felsőtárkány 16-22 October 2022
The third international meeting was organized in Felsőtárkány, Hungary between 16-22 October 2022.
The programme started with an opening ceremony at Felsőtárkány Primary school where the headmaster greeted the guests and the students performed a variety of traditional dances from Hungary. We spent the day with ice breaker games to boost the communication between the students. It was followed by a short introduction of the host school and the Hungarian education.
Our topic was the negative effects and dangers of sport and extreme sports. We implemented different activities on the topic. First, a presentation and a discussion were held by a physiotherapist. She drew the students’ attention to the most important negative effects and gave some useful advice to avoid injuries.
In Hungary the participants had the possibility to try five kinds of sport, namely: horse riding, wall climbing, orienteering laser target shooting and archery. Before practising these sports, the students collected information about them and created digital books cooperatively, in mixed teams. During the week the students and teachers took part in different lessons and learnt the basics of these sports. They also joined a PE lesson at the school where sportive relay race was played.
Embedded in the activity, coordinators had a meeting to evaluate the project and to program further details.
The programme was completed by cultural trips.
A sightseeing was organized to the nearby historical town Eger, and we travelled to Budapest and visited the most representative attractions such as the Hungarian Parliament, Buda Castle and Mathias Church.
As a result of the meeting the participants dealt with new aspects of sport and practised new sports. For most students, it was the first time to do orienteering, or horse riding. The project activities motivated the students to try new sports out while paying attention to their safety. Working in mixed groups the students and teachers were encouraged to communicate. Our common language was English, therefore the foreign language skills of the participants improved, they speak English more confidently. Students and teachers made a lot of new friends. To say goodbye was not easy, but it was not the end of the project. This week resulted in a fruitful partnership for teachers and students as well. Everybody looked forward to meeting again in Turkey.
Usak 2023
In the spring of 2023, we visited Usak again to further deepen the cooperation. On this occasion, we got a deeper insight into the practice of teaching physical education and got to know the cultural values of the city better. This time we also played sports together, we played volleyball, basketball and tried a Turkish game called bocce. In addition to the host institution, we also visited another school in the city, where sport plays a prominent role in the curriculum. Here, a well-equipped tennis and archery court was available to the students. Since the meeting took place during Ramadan, more emphasis was placed on the country's religious and cultural characteristics, which made our visit particularly exciting. Despite the strict fasting, the Turkish parents prepared traditional national dishes for us, which we had the opportunity to taste at a joint farewell dinner at school after sunset. It was a great experience to visit one of Turkey's most famous cultural attractions. The limestone formations of Pamukkale and the ruins of Hierapolis are important world heritage sites. In addition to increasing their experience with sports opportunities in Turkey, the participants of the meeting also gained lifelong experiences.
Łódź 2023
The last meeting of the project took place in Poland. The coordinator school prepared large-scale programs for this occasion. We received a friendly welcome with the participation of the school's students and teachers and we discussed the experiences gained during the project with the school's management.
We tested ourselves in several new sports, which offer young people another exciting alternative. In addition to rock climbing, boxing and shooting, bowling also added colour to the offer. Besides playing sports, the students interviewed each other about their sports habits, which gave them an opportunity to collaborate and discuss the topic. The first international sports day was held on the school's sports field. The Turkish, Hungarian, and Polish students competed in the 100-meter sprint, relay race, long jump, and medicine ball throw. The Hungarian students achieved good results in the competitions.
There was no shortage of cultural experiences either, during our sightseeing walks we learned a lot of interesting things about the city's past, gastronomy and sights. It was a special experience to visit Copernicus' hometown, Torun, which is one of the oldest Polish cities. At the closing meeting, the coordinators also evaluated the more than two years of joint work. The results of the questionnaires and reports show that the cooperation was effective. The students took an active part in the project activities, during the two years they got to know more than 15 new sports and were inspired to spend their free time actively. An active lifestyle helps them develop a healthy lifestyle.
